I can still taste the chocolatey-goodness on my tongue from trying this wine for Episode 29 this week so I thought now would be a good time to go ahead and write up my review of this wine. Chocolate Shop wine is a sweet red wine that is infused with dark chocolate. When I first tried this wine at a happy hour event I was expecting it to be a chocolate liqueur masquerading as a wine, similar to ChocoVine. Instead I was surprised when the wine that was poured into the glass looked like a typical red wine but I was equally surprised again when it smelled just like a box of chocolates. It is a fairly confusing sensory experience. Visually it is red wine but smell and taste is almost 100% chocolate. If you smell and taste carefully you can detect a hint of the red wine but it’s definitely an aftertaste.
The wine is very, very, sweet. Pretty much too sweet, especially since we were trying it on a Tuesday afternoon. I am not a sweet wine fan but if you are and you like chocolate you will likely enjoy this wine. The flavor is very chocolate heavy with a hint of cherries at the end. Charlie said it reminded him of chocolate covered cherries. This wine is made by Chocolate Shop Wines in Walla Walla, Washington. They also have a Creme de Cocoa and Chocolate Strawberry wines in addition to the original. We purchased our’s at Jungle Jim‘s for about $10 a bottle. Over all, for a novelty wine it was not bad but you would have to be either a big fan of sweet wine or chocolate to enjoy this on a regular basis. But don’t take my word for it. Here is a video of someone who actually knows a lot about wine trying it.
Bwahahah! Loved the look on her face! I got a bottle of this, too. Didn’t quite react the way she did. In fact drank pretty much the whle bottle, but mainly because I spent money on it. Will not be getting it again… blah
I totally feel for Madeline and her friends with this one…sitting in the sunshine with a great red wine and taking the occasional bite of an awesome chocolate from Switzerland or Peru or wherever is a wonderful way to pass the afternoon….but putting a sickly fake chocolate taste and fragrance inside a wine is not (IMO) a great combination. What do you think?
I agree Andrew, I will keep my wine and chocolate separate.
